Where are you on this scale?
Question by Asterisk: Where are you on this scale?
Often in golf you might hear the phrase, “It’s not the club, it’s the player swinging it.” when describing the results of a shot. This phrase is usually uttered by folks who believe that differences in club design do not have a huge effect on shots. For a long time I was at the extreme end of that scale. Meaning if I were to balance in percentages how much of an effect the player has versus how much of an effect the design of the club has, I would have been around 95% player/5% club design. I played the same set of irons for 12 years, the same driver for several years and so on. But I recently bought some new irons and have gone through a couple drivers in the last 3 years and the new technology has changed my mind a little. I’m still leaning toward the player.
But I would say now that I believe the results of shot(distance and accuracy) are about 80% player/20% club design.

I don’t get it. Can I have 10 pts anyway?
Sb
75 player / 25 clubs
the ongoing technology is something you cannot dismiss.. maybe a long time ago when all the clubs were basically the same this saying was true.. but now.. thousands of diffrent club types… cant dismiss that fact
for any sport its the player %99 of the time. The %1 of the time its a situation like you have a club thats meant for someone who is a pro and is much stronger than u and u can’t control the club. Don’t distract your self with things like that when u are on the course.
I had a nice set of irons when i was 17 and halfway through golf season, i got new irons and added 10-15 yards. No new swing, just new clubs and i hit the ball harder. Secondly, Ive been using the same driver for 8 years and I just got a new Cobra driver, 3 wood, baffler… I added 40 yards to my drive… on average about 15, but I am in areas of my home course that I have never been with the new driver, and I hit the ball MUCH straighter.
All in all… I would agree with you, but I think the most technologically advanced clubs that have come out in the past 2-3 years are substantially better and will improve your game more than any lesson. So I would go with more like 70%player 30%club design.
Example #2 A friend of mine was using an old set of irons, and hitting his 7 iron 150, got one of the new Callaway iron sets… hits the ball straight and about 15 yards further… he has been playing for less than one year and these clubs have dropped his overall score from over 100 to about 92… and he only plays a few times a month… Technology is incredible
90% golfer – 10% clubs.
you can have the best clubs in the world but if you dont swing them the ball wont go anywhere
Well if you have clubs from 20 years ago and go buy brand new clubs, then yes it does make you alot better. If you have cheap but fairly new clubs and go buy the most technology advanced clubs on the market, you will be better but the amount to which you will get better determines how good of a golfer you are. If you are an excellent golfer who has a good swing and shoots under or around 100, then I think you will increase your golf game. If you are just starting out and you aren’t real good at golf, then your clubs won’t help you out much. I would say good golfer it is 75 player to 25 club, and new/bad players it is 99 player to 1 club.
well it all has some truth to it…but lets face it…a club doesnt make you shank it, slice it or hook it…the player does…i recently went in to buy a new iron set…i took 7 different types of 7 irons to the computerized driving range they had at golf galaxy…and though some of the irons worked betyter with my swing to get a long striaght shot…most of the clubs faired about the same…it was me with bad huits that made any of those irons look like they werent doin the job for me…
