Question by H2Oskier: What’s the significance of the number on a Titleist golf ball?
I have Titleist golf balls that say Titleist 1 & Titleist 3. What’s the difference?

The numbers are on the balls, so two or more players who like to play the same type of ball can do so without the risk of confusing their ball with someone else’s.
For example, when two people playing Titleist Pro V1s hit in the same general direction (and maybe don’t mark it or have similar ball marks), they can tell which from which by the number on the ball.

no difference but if you get a 12 pack of them (4 sleeves, 3 balls each) each sleeve of balls has a different #.. one sleeve will have all the balls with a 1 on them and the next sleeve will have all 2s on them…etc

there’s no difference. It’s just a system to identify your ball. you declare that you’re playing a Titleist 3 at the first tee so that everybody know what ball you’re using. Many people will also use a sharpie and put some type of a mark on it so that it can be identified as being their ball. Initials or dots are the most common method.

What is significant about the number is the colour. Years ago manufacturers would print the compression rating right onto the ball. Today compression rating is colour coded. A black number indicates a high compression ball, Red is medium and blue is low. The higher the compression, the harder the ball. This is important to know because the slower your swing speed the softer the ball you should be using.

The number is merely a method of identification. In addition to different numbers the golf association suggests that we mark our balls with another marking unique to ourselves to insure positive identification.

just used for identification. you should still mark your ball. also, if you play a provisional, hit a different number so you can say “my second ball was a #3″ or whatever. I’ve hit two out of the same sleeve to almost the same place before and didn’t know which one was the first one hit.

You can get higher numbered balls too. Titleist makes 5-8 that is pretty easy to find and I think Taylormade will let you custom order whatever 2-digit number you want. Someone plays #11 because that’s how many tour tournaments they won. It might be Freddy Couples, but I forget.
