Question by rpm_photo: Should I take the summer to practice my golf while taking part time job?
So – I’m currently 24 and I have a 5 handicap. I played golf competitively in high school, and performed well, but when my dad passed away when I was 16, the money and time to play disappeared slightly as well. I am currently working at a large company as a contractor. My contract is set to expire at May 15th. I might have an opportunity to continue with my employment here, but even if I had that opportunity, I’m not sure if I want to.

What I would like to do this spring/summer/fall (my goals) is try to qualify for the WSGA State Am, and try to qualify for the USGA Am tournaments. If I am able to qualify, my goal is to make the cut in these tournaments. In order to do that, I realize I would need to invest a lot of time into my game. I would like to spend a large amount of time taking lessons with my pro, practicing, and playing multiple times per week. In order to get this time to play, I would need to leave my 40-hour per week day job, and go back to serving tables at night or something. I’d obviously be taking a slight pay-cut, but I think it would be fun, and I feel like I need to at least try for this.

I’m getting married in June this year, and my fiance is supportive of my goals. We know there is a slight risk involved (with leaving a potentially good job), but I feel that since I am young, those opportunities will always be there, but the opportunity to try to really reach my dreams/goals might not. I understand that becoming great at golf is a process, and I think that by competing in some tournaments this summer in preparation for the State Am would be a good idea in order for me to be able to try to reach my goals.

Your call but good jobs may not always be there as readily as you think

Your getting married and should take into account that its time to consider that a family may be soon coming your way

You can work hard on your game while still working 8 to 5, it doesn’t get dark until 9 and that leaves plenty of time for practice and play on the weekends

The reality is that you can qualify for the AM’s working 8 to 5, don’t use that as a crutch
