Need help with first set of clubs?
Question by jescott0517: Need help with first set of clubs?
I recently got a job at a golf course and part of my perks are free golf, free lessons and golf equipment at reduced rates. I do not have my own clubs and will have to use rentals for my lessons and golf until I can save up money to buy my own. During this wait time though should I at least invest $ 300 for the Top Flite XL5000 complete box set so that I at least have my own clubs to get used to? Should I stick with the rentals instead since they are brand name Cobras? Have you heard anything about Bionic brand golf gloves? Are they good to buy or just a waste of money?

i would save up about $ 450 and buy a pre-owned set of irons and also buy a three wood. i wouldnt buy a driver until you can hit your 3 wood pretty decent. and of course you need a putter, so i would again buy a pre-owned one at a local golf store. (golfsmith)

Don’t buy the box set. Take as many free lessons as they will give you. I’m sure the pro has demos or a fitting cart you can use for your lessons and practice time on the range. Use rentals when you play 18. Practice 5x more than you play. Practice your short game 3x more than your long game.
After a number of lessons ask the pro to make a recomendation on types and fit of clubs you should be using. Buy them used. You can find some great used sets for $ 300-500.
Bionic gloves are good, but for now put that $ 30 towards your set of clubs. Unless you have hand problems or arthritis you will be just fine with a normal golf glove.
Good luck.
Like the previous posters said, stick with the lessons and the rentals. After awhile, your teacher will be able to recommend a good set for you with the proper shafts and lofts. The Top Flites are a decent starter set, but once your game improves from your lessons, you will want to upgrade quickly, so I wouldnt mess with them if you can get the rentals for free.
As far as the Bionic gloves go, they are some of the best fitting gloves I have ever used and they feel amazing. The problem with them is they wear quickly and therefore, in my opinion, they are not worth the money
agree with above poster, buy your clubs after getting some suggestion from golf teacher
I learned from a friend who was scratch golfer. His advice to me was not to spend the money on a good set of clubs until I have had some experience and know what I want. What you buy today may be good for your first year only – or less. After a short time, you may regret investing in clubs you don’t want/can’t use anymore.
Use clubs that you will have access to regularly (the actual clubs – not just the type) – don’t keep changing clubs – you’ll just mess yourself up and get (more) frustrated with the game.
Use your sources at hand, get the pro to size you up and recommend a set of GOOD used clubs.
Lessons are fine, but you only really learn by playing.
The previous posters have said it before. Rent the clubs for a while, that will give you a better idea of what you need. Then, ask your pro for advice. They know a get deal about your size, swing and length.
