…1979, what event was this?
Would have been early June 1979 if my memory serves me correctly, I was at U of Iowa sports summer camp.

Your recollection might have been for a “Celebrity Appearance” Mr. Watson made in between regular tournament appearances that year… These “Clinics” have always been fairly common on the PGA Tour.

This is a link to the PGA Tour schedule for 1979: http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/pga/schedule?season=1979, and in looking at it you will readily see there were no scheduled tournaments for the PGA Tour in Iowa that year.

The Kemper Open was held between May 31 and June 3 in Maryland, and the following week the tour stop was at the TPC Sugarloaf in Atlanta Georgia… The rest of the month the tour stops were in New York State, Canada (Watson was there) and Tennessee.

1979 was a good year for Tom Watson in that he won 5 tournaments and was named “PGA Player of the Year”, an award he would go on to win 6 times including 4 straight years beginning in 1977. Mr. Watson is well known by golf fans the world over as a gentleman as well as one of the greatest ever in the sport so it is quite likely he was making such appearances in 1979 as well as throughout his career.

You are very lucky to have had the experience of meeting Tom Watson… The best I can say for myself is that I met Chi Chi Rodriguez, which is no small claim to fame where I come from…
