Gerrie Coetzee vs Corrie Sanders?
Question by Brad Morris: Gerrie Coetzee vs Corrie Sanders?
The Coetzee that drilled Dokes vs. the Sanders that clocked Klitschko.
Make this 15 rounds
I’ve got a soft spot for Gerrie Coetzee. Growing up in South Africa in the 70s and 80s, he was a national hero. The guy who had all the skills – and that bionic hand – but there was just something missing.
He fought before the first integrated audience at a sporting match when he lost to John Tate in ’79.
He won the title on his 3rd try when he pulled off Ring Magazine’s Upset of the Year in ’83, knocking out an unbeaten Michael Dokes in 10. Helluva fight.
Then he got lazy, sat on his a** for 14 months and got KOd by Greg Page in 8.
He epitomised the difference between American and South African fighters then – for the Americans, winning the title was the beginning of the dream.
Sanders is an oddity – a left handed human wrecking machine – ask the IBF champ – who always had one foot on the golf course. He’s a pro now.
What happens if these two go head to head?

“The African Connection” this would have been a good one. Coetzee was the first ever African to win the Heavyweight Championship of the World. Devastating right hand when it landed and all around good ring generalship.
Corrie Sanders only three losses in his career beat up Vitali and made it look easy (Sam Peter couldn’t do it)
This one wouldn’t need 15 rounds Brad, these two guys could crack and it would happen inside of 8 rounds. In my opinion I’d have to lean towards Gerrie, I think he fought the better competition. Those Haevyweights in the 80′s were a different breed Tate, Weaver, Holmes and even Renaldo Snipes could beat circles around todays crop of crap.
Coetzee would have a few problems in the first 3 rounds namely Sanders left hand (Due to the fact he only fought one Southpaw his entire career in the amatuers or Pro’s) but he would adjust and get into his rythm and his big right hand would begin to land with conviction. Too many hard shots off the head of Sanders would be enough to have the Ref stop this fight 2:00 into round 7. Corrie was game but would be taking just too much punishment.
Thanks Brad.

Brad, Coetzee KO inside of 10 rounds. I’m got to go will add comments later. Thanks.
Coetzee – W 33 (KO’s 21) TF 40 – W pct 83% – KO pct 53% – wins over L. Spinks, Dokes and Tillis – KO’ed by Weaver, Page and Bruno
Sanders – W 40 (KO’s 30) TF 43 – W pct 93% – KO pct 69% – wins over B. Cooper, W. Klitschko and Czyz – KO’ed by Tubbs, Raham and V. Klitschko
I was going to have this as a pick ‘em fight. Coetzee fought better fighters than Sanders. Coetzee in a 13th rd KO.
P. S. Brad, if you grew up where I think you grew up then please tell the world that there is politics in sports/boxing.
