Question by Adam B: Do the pros use the same golf balls that we buy in the store?
for example… a guy like Tiger Woods playing the Nike One. Does he use the same exact Nike golf ball that you would buy in the pro shop or are his balls modified to fit his game.

I can see a company modifying a ball for Tiger but still keeping the same name on it so that people will buy “the same ball that tiger uses”

Yes they are the same… PGA Pro’s get their balls directly from the manufacturer in a box label “For Tour Use Only” that label doesn’t mean the ball is different it means that box is not available for retail sales…. kinda like when you get a promo sleeve or an item that says “Not for retail sale”… the company that makes them doesn’t make a “profit” because they are just given to the tour players….

What do you think? Answer below!

    Sort of.
They are made to the same spec, but they will test them and select the best for use by the pros.

your right Tiger uses a lower launching platinum then the store bought one. the reason that they don’t have the same one is because it wouldn’t performe better for most of the people that buy them

  3. Tiger says:

Pretty much, pros have access to all sorts of prototypes though so they might play the same ball but they are always testing new and better ones.

Every top of the line ball from every major manufacturer is awesome these days, just try to find them in a river because buying them requires a sub-prime mortgage.

NO they don’t. These balls that are “For tour use only” go through much more rigorous quality control standards. They are machined less than 100 at a time, while retail balls are produced by the 10000.
the specs should be the same, but slip ups happen much more often at the 10000 level than the 100. Tiger uses a prototype ball, as well as many other tour pros.
Some pros take no matter in their balls though. They believe that a pure shot is pure, if they hit a rock or a PRO v1. Every one believes something different though…

The balls used on the PGA tour are the same construction as the store balls and must meet the standards established by the PGA. I believe that there is a list of approved balls similar to the list used by the USGA.

You can buy the same ball Tiger Woods(or any other pro) uses unless he is using a prototype of a new ball. Pros get equipment prior to the public getting the equipment. Tiger used a different ball a long time ago, but then Nike decided to sell the ball to the public.

No- Stewart Cink uses a “prototype” One Tour D. The insides are like a store-version Tour D, but the cover is as soft as the One Tour. It also isn’t for sale.
