If you golf by USGA golf rules, this video shows how to handle the situation where your golf ball winds up on a cart path.
However if you play by TeeGolf rules, you can take a drop behind the cart path if you want. But according to the rules you can do the following:
Place the golf ball on a tee as far back from the original lie of the ball on a line from the pin through the original lie, all within one club width on each side of that line.
