how do you determine your handicap in golf.?
People telling me they are a single digit handicap and when I view the way they swing, they slice and hook it like there is no tomorrow. Grant it that I did not play with them so I can not determine how they play the golf course. I play a course Par 71, I average around 94, does this mean my handicap is 23?

To determine your handicap… Play a total of 10 rounds(18 holes each round, of course.) Take out your best and worst rounds which leaves you with 8 rounds. Your handicap is the average amount that you shot over par. After you determine what it is everytime you play you add your new round to the average. If you are a scratch golfer your handicap is zero or less than zero. I hope I explained this ok. If not go to… http://probablegolfinstruction.com/golf-handicap-calculator.htm
If you are playing for fun, have no membership at a course, your 23 would not stand at our country club. The official USGA method is to take the 10 best of the last 20 scores, factor by the course rating where they were played over 113. Subtract the par for those 10 rounds. from the total of the 10 best scores. The resulting number is multiplied by .96 to determine the handicap. This is the index used for tournaments.
Handicap has absolutely nothing to do with par. I wish I had a nickel for every time I typed that sentence.
It is based on course rating (how difficult the course is for an expert golfer) and slope rating (how difficult the course is for a “bogey golfer”.)
The link below has the formula for you.
No your handicap is lower than a 23. You take your best10 out of last 20 scores (To get the most accurate handicap). Then subtract the par for the course from your score to find out how much over par you are then multiply the average strokes over par by .96 (taking 96%). This will give you a very accurate handicap. However there are some rules that apply to 9-hole and unfinished rounds that you would like to count toward your handicap. Also, once you get a handicap you need to post calculated scores. Based on your handicap you are only allowed to have a certain # of strokes per hole. This helps your score. ex. I am a 12 handicap so the most I can post for a single hole is 7. I shoot an 86 but i have a 8 on two of my holes.. My calculated score would be a 84 because I have a maximum of 7 strokes per hole. The calculated score takes strokes off your holes to give you a more accurate handicap. Also your handicap depends on your course and slope ratings.
yes.
