Hi, I am wanting to work on improving my golf swing. Should I get lessons or what about any of the golf instruction you can find online or both?

Thanks

Hello. Golf is an awesome game but can be frustrating to learn as you continue to get better which is lifelong of course.

It’s good you’re asking about the golf swing b/c that is most fundamental if you want to improve your scores.

Golf lessons is recommended- in a 30-60 minute session a pro can really help you iron out kinks and tweak parts of your swing that you may not know need fixed. However, they can get costly depending on where you go.

There are many great products and tutorials that offer golf tips both free and paid. One such that I found useful is the Simple Golf Swing. In fact we’ve done a review of the course here – http://www.golf-made-simple.com/simple-golf-swing-course-review.html – it may be just what you need to get started for less money.

All in all learn as much as you can, but take action with each new thing you learn.

    Hope that helps,

    Joe

The key to a good swing is the basics. The basics aren’t rocket science. You could go to a pro and get lessons but if you don’t wont to spend the money you could easily find something useful online.
First and formost focus on having the correct grip (google golf grip). Second make sure you understand what a correct stance is. Then make sure that you always practice with the correct alignment to the hole. I can’t stress this enough. Simply walking on to the driving range and hitting balls ‘willy-nilly’ at a target is a big no-no. Always put a club down on the ground which helps you align yourself correctly with the target. Your club should be aiming straight at the target while your feet should be directly at 90 degrees to the target/club face. Put down a club so that your feet are aligned slightly to the left of the target (if youa are right handed). I hope you can understand that, but put simply everything should be parrallet to the target. If you get into the habit of not focussing on the basics, you will develop bad habbits and if you ingrain a bad habbit into your game it can often be irreversable.
I believe once you have mastered the basics (grip, stance, alignment) its all go from there. Don’t get to technical there after. Often people get ‘over-coached’ and turn into ‘robots’ with no feel or adaptability. You need to find a natural swing and rythm that suits you. Always remember that the aim is to hit the ball into the hole, not to have the perfect swing.
Conquer the basics and let your imagination do the rest.

    lessons do help.
However, the most common problem with beginners is that they almost always have a bad grip.

Try to fix that and then go back to the range and (practicing your new grip) start hitting sand & pitching wedges with a half swing and slowly moving to the full swing. You will see an amazing difference in the way you hit. After hitting several hundred balls you will start to feel more comfortable with the swing.

Also (MOST IMPORTANT!) DO NOT HIT YOUR DRIVER when you are learning the golf swing. Most new players go hit the driver because it can go the furthest (DON’T!) it will build some very bad habits that are tough to cure. Patience! practice the golf swing described above using the 9 and 7 iron and you should seem some results pretty quickly. After several thousand balls have been hit (accurately), you can try learning how to fade and draw the ball. After another several thousand balls you can go to the driver. If you have built a consistent swing, you will be able to hit the driver no problem, but don’t touch it until you’ve mastered the swing. The last thing you want to do is have two different swings for hitting the irons and the driver.

First of all….there is no such thing as a “perfect” golf swing….Per the book by Dr. Bob Rotella “Golf is not a Game of Perfect”….Great Book ! Golf is as much a mental game has it is a physical game.
If you set out trying to develop a “perfect swing” you will only be setting yourself up for failure and disappointment. I think for the physical learning curve you would be best to seek out a professional teaching pro….Although they may cost a bit of money per hour, in that hour they will be able to give enough to work on for sometime. There are tons of videos of tour pros on sites like Youtube…search Fred Couple’s swing…one of the best. What makes Fred swing so awesome is his TEMPO. Just like watching Ken Griffy Jr. hit home runs, Fred at 50 can still pound a golf ball well over 300 yrds because of that awesome TEMPO. They don’t like they are even trying to hit the ball hard but obviously they do. In his book Fred admits to trying to hit the #$#$@ out of the ball, but in TEMPO……For the mental side of the house read Dr. Bob Rotella’s books…easy read…fast read….it will change your whole entire thought process about golf but life as well…….

If you can afford to have both lesson and read online instruction that would be much better to perfect that swing.

Also remember: Practice always makes things perfect.
