This is absolutely pitiful?
Question by Eclipse: This is absolutely pitiful?
It bothers me that this Tiger Woods “controversy” is getting more attention than the health care debate, or the Afghanistan by the American people. The man had an affair, and his personal life should be of no concern to anybody. The attention on Iran’s protests was also immediately dropped after Micheal Jackson’s death. It seems like celebrities’ lives are more important to people than current domestic and foreign affairs.
Another thing is the heavy division that has grown over the last couple of years. You don’t need to look any further than this “Current Events” section. It disgusts me to see that people shoot down another Americans’ ideas and views simply because of their political affiliation. Racial, religious, and sexual prejudice aside (they still do exist), another discrimination that is gaining strength is political prejudice. People tend to categorize others as a liberal or conservative, and then ignore and criticize everything they have to say, most of the times with very little to none outside knowledge, just because of their political affiliation. If we plan to continue as a world superpower, we must agree to disagree, and become more unified. As one man declared, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.”
What do you guys think?

I believe our extremely biased media feeds this crap to the American people to keep our minds off what our Government is doing to our country.
Or:
This goofy stuff is all the majority of Americans actually care about, and it’s all about ratings.
Pretty sad either way.

You needed that rant…
feeling better now?
It’s a chicken egg thing for large percentage of population. They get fed trash24/7 for years, then it’s little wonder why what appeals to them most is trash. A certain percentage will always like just Philadelphia Inquirer stuff, but feel most would like hard news if getting it was made easier and cheaper. For me Tiger Woods stuff was interesting two days.
Our politicians foster this contempt and are doing so for their own corrupt and self serving purposes.
They hide under cover of ” doing what’s best for the country”. Wise up people…our country is
being taken from us by deception and lies.
I agree with your observations. The polarization of American politics began with Newt Gingrich’s personal quest for power and his whipping up the Republicans into a non-partisanship bent, much like politics in the 19th century. Prior to Newt, we had several decades off grudging corporation between the parties. Perhaps this is just the natural swinging of political pendulums. Unfortunately our style of government is still too young to make reasonable analysis of trends. Give it about another 200 years.
As for our obsession with celebrity minutia, it goes to Americans’ love/hate relationship with Royalty. Since we have no Dukes and Kings, we invent them. How else do you become a Governor and/or President only because of name recognition (this also goes for wives of Senators, Representatives, and former Presidents). We love the names and hate them for having more than we do, whether that is money and/or fame. Again going back to the 19th and early 20th century, politicians (who did not have the perks they do now) would saying vicious things about each other, and famous actors or sports figures (who also did not make much money but had fame) were thrown out on their ears if any morality issues became public. But I see the world doing a two step forward, one and a half step back dance. I have hope as long as no one gets stupid with nukes.
The division is fostered by the political and entertainment elites who stay in power by creating headlines over issues that are not really significant to the life of the country, but get people excited nonetheless. The country itself is really not that divided. Many people are saying similar things or are willing to find compromise. The thing is that many times we are not really listening to each other, but to the elites who want to drive controversy. We will always divide politically I don’t think that is really a problem. I think the problem is that those who drive the debate are only interested in power and prestige and are not working to find solutions to problems.
Our country seems to be taking a conservative swing right now (just a personal observation) and for some reason the private lives and morals of famous people certainly seems very important to an awful lot of people. I think a lot of people feel a great deal of confusion and powerlessness about the serious topics facing the country and the world so instead of focusing on the important issues you mentioned they focus on things that they understand and on which their opinions have as much weight as anyone else’s. It’s hard to argue about issues we don’t understand because we may show our ignorance and be humiliated in public. The issues of morals and right and wrong are more clear cut and widely understood. Also, our public figures have become role models for us, especially our sports figures. It is a great disappointment to find out that someone you have looked up to, emulated and pointed to as positive examples for our children has been leading a less than praiseworthy life. We feel personally let down and angry. Tiger Woods is a prime example of this as I’m sure most people viewed him as a squeaky clean hero who beat all odds to triumph over prejudice, poverty and obscurity. He appeared close to his parents, dignified and worked hard for his successes. The truth appears somewhat wide of his public persona and people are shocked and feel betrayed. People expect political figures to be shady and have little hope or understanding of the larger topics facing us as a nation. I hope this changes.
Very well said.
