To be honest, if you have not spent a good amount of time on the driving range learning to make contact with the ball, and spent time practicing chipping and putting around the practice green , AND become informed about etiquette during a round of golf, you really have no business being on a golf course.

First thing, on hitting the ball:
There are two things that beginners do that hurts them.
First is that you don’t need to help the ball up, even though that is your natural reaction. You want to hit down on the ball to make it go up, that’s why the club has loft. This usually is hard for beginners to grasp and they end up topping a lot of shots. So try to hit down onto the ball to hit it. Hit down into the dirt just in front of the ball.
Second, is too much movement. Because you want to hit it hard, beginners tend to sway back and up way too much. Try to keep your spine and body still… just rotate around your spine. That will make it much easier to hit the ball solidly.
Also, just focus on solid contact. That will make the ball go farther. The more muscle you try to put into it the worse your contact will be because the more you will instinctively sway over the ball.
Most important thing is to just relax and have fun. Enjoy being outside.
As far as shoes, any tennis, running, etc. type of shoe is fine.
Hope this helps and good luck!!

My question would be are you going because you want to or because you have to? If you’re going because you’re genuinely interested you could always practice at home first.
I found a helpful article on “How to Get Started in Golfing”:http://site.iznadgolf.com/blog/2009/08/3…
Hope it helps.
Thanks

keep both feet on the grounds at all times. line the ball up with your left foot if you are a righty, slow back swing then put all your power into hitting it.

Cody, if it is the first time, the driving range should be enough. It takes time for anyone to learn the basics. Are the clubs you have fitted for your size? Like clothes you have to feel comfortable in them and golf clubs and grips also have to be comfortable. Shoes on the driving range can be tennis or sports walking shoes. TIP; grip the club like you would shake hands. Thumb along top of grip other hand close together. The LEFT arm hand must be straight and is the power hand and the right is the guide hand. Take a stance with feet evenly spaced either side of the ball. Slowly bring the club backwards in line with the ball with the left hand. When the club face (blade) reaches the right hip area cock the hands and continue the back swing until it is over right shoulder. Then bring the arms back down in a swing to the ball as you turn your hips left. When the blade catches the ball you should be facing to your front at the target. The club should end in back of your head and the right foot is on its toes. This is basic lesson number one. ALWAYS, ALWAYS KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN LOOKING AT THE BALL UNTIL YOU SEE THE BALL BEING HIT. The follow through will turn your head around to face the target. As for hitting it hard, don’t try until you have more experience. The danger is not being able to control the golf ball flight if you try to hit it hard for distance. Have fun on the driving range and let the golf course wait for later.

Hello there,
About the shoes. You should wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in. You will be doing a lot of walking. Also, the soles should not be slick. You do not need to have your feet sliding while you are trying to swing the golf club.
As for the swing in a nutshell. (Assuming you are right handed).
Grip. Grip the club with your left hand so the club runs along the base of your fingers and not back in the palm. As you close your hand around the club, there will be a V formed between your thumb and forefinger. Have that V pointed roughly at your right ear. That will mean you can see 2 knuckles of your left hand. Place your right hand on the club so that your left thumb fits into meaty area under the base of your right thumb. Then wrap your right hand around the club. You probably should try to have your little finger of your right hand over lap the forefinger of your left hand. The basic idea behind this grip is to have the hand joined together and work together.
Swing the club back slowly. As you take the club back your body should rotate, actually coil. Try to rotate your body around an imaginary line running down through your head. You head should not sway from side to side. When your swing gets to the top, the club will be sort of parallel to the ground. Then start the club back down as your body uncoils. You probably can see from this that your arms just move along with the rest of your body. You do not really pick up the club with your hands and arms in the swing.
Do not try to kill the ball to make it go farther. Instead, whatever you consider to be a swing at full force, try to swing at about 75% to 80% of full force.
More important than how hard you swing is that you make good solid contact. Try to hit the ball with the sweet spot on the face of the club each time you swing.
It is a game. Have fund and enjoy yourselfl
Good luck to you
